Rishikesh to Kedarnath by Bike — Route, Distance, Cost & Best Bikes (2026)

Rishikesh to Kedarnath by bike through the Garhwal Himalayas

Riding from Rishikesh to Kedarnath is one of the most rewarding journeys in the Himalayas — a 220 km mountain route that follows the holy Mandakini and Alaknanda rivers up to the gateway of one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. Here’s everything you need to plan it on two wheels.

The route at a glance

Rishikesh → Devprayag → Srinagar (Garhwal) → Rudraprayag → Guptkashi → Sonprayag → Gaurikund (bike parking) → Kedarnath (16 km trek).

  • Total distance: ~220 km from Rishikesh to Gaurikund/Sonprayag (the last point you can ride to).
  • Riding time: 8–10 hours of actual riding; plan it over 2 days, not one.
  • Final stretch: bikes are parked at Sonprayag; the last 16 km to Kedarnath temple is on foot (or by pony/palki).

Suggested 2-day plan

Day 1: Rishikesh → Rudraprayag (~140 km, 5–6 hrs). Stop overnight. Break the climb at Srinagar Garhwal for lunch and fuel.

Day 2: Rudraprayag → Sonprayag (~75 km, 3–4 hrs), park, and begin the Kedarnath trek.

Which bike should you rent?

The climb has long gradients and high-altitude air, so torque matters more than top speed.

  • Best choice: Royal Enfield Hunter 350 — its low-end torque pulls comfortably uphill, and the upright seating is kind on your back over long days. See our Royal Enfield rental.
  • A 160cc bike like the Apache also works well for lighter riders.
  • A scooty is fine up to Rudraprayag but not recommended for the full Kedarnath climb with luggage.

We can hand the bike over in Rishikesh or arrange pickup near Rudraprayag — see bike rent in Rudraprayag.

Fuel & money planning

  • Fuel stops: Rishikesh, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Guptkashi. Fill up at Guptkashi — pumps get sparse beyond it.
  • Approx fuel cost: Rs.800–Rs.1,200 round trip depending on your bike.
  • Rental: from Rs.600/day; multi-day trips get weekly rates — ask on WhatsApp at +91 9870711571.

Safety & tips

  • Carry your licence, ID and IDP (foreign riders) — there are checkposts on this route.
  • Start early; mountain weather turns by afternoon. Avoid riding after dark on the ghats.
  • Check the Kedarnath yatra registration and weather before you go.
  • Pack a rain layer — even outside monsoon, the upper valley gets sudden showers.
